Great piece. However, even within the GTA, a community like Newmarket would not want to be swamped in a 5-member district with Markham, and more so outside the GTA. That's why most commissions have recommended a mixed-member system like Scotland, Wales, New Zealand and Germany: you elect both a local MP and a few regional MPs for top-up seats. Would still produce moderate results with 12-MP regions like Wales, or even 8-MP regions.
The regional misrepresentation (shortage of government MPs to stand up for prairie concerns in particular) is an especially bad feature of our non-proportional voting system. Great article Yared.
